One of the important Safavid chronicles, Jahāngošā-ye Ḫāqān, which had long been considered as written in the middle of the 16th century, has finally been proven to be a product of the mid-17th century. This inevitably obliges us to re-evaluate some facts of the early years of the Safavid dynasty. Probing deeply into contemporary Persian chronicles, this article seeks a new interpretation of the career of Dūrmiš Ḫān Šāmlū, who is known to have advised Šāh ‘Esmā‘īl I to attack the Ottomans frontally at the battle Čālderān (1514).
