Abe, Naofumi
« Nādir Shāh and the Afghan Corps ». The Journal of the Research Department of the Toyo Bunko, 85-4 (2004), pp. 27-55 [in Japanese].

This interesting paper discusses some aspects of the reorganization of the Iranian world after the collapse of the Safavid dynasty. The author pays special attention to the Afghan tribes who followed Nādir Šāh’s campaign, dividing them into two groups: the Abdālīs, and those from the east of Qandahar. Loyal to the conqueror, the former tribes were entrusted with the government of Qandahar and, soon after his death, founded a new dynasty, the Durrānī dynasty. Dispatched by Nādir to various parts of Iran for the maintenance of order, the latter tribes provoked deep resentment among the local people, which led to their purge from Iran by Karīm Ḫān Zand. Thus, argues the author, the Afghan elements were largely detached from the Iranian world.
