« Ein illustriert iatromagischer Text als Bestandteil von ‘Agâ’ib al-Mahlûqât-Handschriften : vom Staunen über die Wunder der Schöpfung zur magischen Praxis », in : J. Schmidt, ed., Essays in Honour of Barbara Fleming. Journal of Turkish Studies, 26/II (2002), pp. 183-186, 6 ills.
K. Rührdanz analyzes the introduction of what she calls « Dīw-nāma » (about seventy-two demons) into manuscript copies of the ⁽Ajā’ib al-maḫlūqāt wa ġarā’ib al-mawjūdāt, the cosmography ascribed to Moḥammad ibn Maḥmūd al-Ṭūsī (12th c.), since the 16th century. She characterizes the original version of the Dîw-nâma as a iatromagical work. Combining the analysis of the evolution of the miniatures with an investigation of the introduction of all versions of the Dīw-nāma, she can show the work’s origin in « Salomon’s Testament ». She interprets the combination of the Dīw-nāma with Ṭūsī’s cosmography and its illumination as a result of a process typical for the Ottoman Empire in the second half of the 16th century: the integration of non-elite texts into the realm of illustrated books.
