1La mission syro-belge a présenté un résumé de son travail sur le Tell Tweini en 2008. Ce site, situé à une vingtaine de km au sud de Lattaquié, correspond très vraisemblablement à la cité de Gibala des textes ougaritiques. Gibala était à l’époque du Bronze en contact avec tous les grands centres levantins tels Qatna, Alep (Jamhad), Ebla puis ensuite Ugarit, Tell Kazel, Kamid el-Loz et Byblos. Le site est resté habité jusqu’à l’époque islamique. L’époque achéménide (IA III) correspond aux couches Tweini VA-B. Gibala faisait alors vraisemblablement partie de l’état-cité d’Arwad. La publication n’apporte que peu de détails sur ce grand village situé alors dans une région densément peuplée.
