1Ce numéro spécial est consacré à la publication des actes d’un symposium de la Asia Society, tenu le 13 juillet 2002 et intitulé Ta’ziyeh: Performing Iran’s Living Epic Tradition. Les différents articles suivent l’histoire de cet art depuis son origine à Kerbela jusqu’à son développement en une forme dramatique établie en Iran, son adaptation au Liban, en Inde et aux Caraïbes, et son apparition récente sur les scènes occidentales. Cette étude dévoile de nombreux aspects historiques, culturels, religieux et politiques des communautés shi’ites.

2Ce volume reconsidère également certaines opinions émises dans le célèbre ouvrage collectif édité par P. Chelkowski, Ta’ziyeh: Ritual and Drama in Iran, 1979, tenant ainsi compte des avancées dans les études théâtrales et des nouvelles définitions du théâtre. Dès l’article d’introduction de John Bell, le ton est donné : la définition occidentale classique du théâtre ne convient plus dans le cadre de l’étude des théâtres du monde, car elle est trop restrictive et trop marquée par son contexte spécifique. C’est cette définition réductrice qui a permis d’affirmer que le théâtre n’avait jamais existé dans le monde musulman avant l’époque moderne, en dépit de l’existence d’autres types de performances telles que le récit (ḥakawātī), le théâtre d’ombres (ḫayāl al-ẓil), la projection d’images (tamāṯīl, pardezanī), les marionnettes (aragoz), ou justement la ta‘ziye. Cette vision des choses commence à peine à être remise en cause (Shmuel Moreh, Live Theatre and Dramatic Literature in the Medieval Arab World, 1992). Les articles « Acting Styles and Actor Training in Ta’ziyeh » de William O. Beenam et Mohammad B. Ghaffâri (p. 48-60) et « Ta’ziyeh as Theatre of Protest » de Hamid Dabashi (p. 91-99) sont particulièrement novateurs. L’ouvrage est par ailleurs illustré de photos éclairantes.
